Luminescent Lena

Ten divers took the short drive down to Bunbury on Saturday, 10th January 2015 to dive on one of the easiest and best dives in the Southwest.

Lena Wreck by Brett Cook

A quick meet and greet for those that hadn’t dived with Kim Royce and Octopus Garden Marine Charters and we were a quick, 40 minute steam out to the dive site for the first of two dives on this scuttled fishing boat.

Some local information provided through Kim to complete the dive brief in transit provided for a quick entry into the cool beautiful blue waters of Geographe Bay. The wreck was visible from the surface adding to the ease of dropping down right on top of the boat.
Abundant fish life surrounded us as we split into our buddy groups to explore this site. We were both presented with a Port Jackson shark either side of the bow allowing for many photos to be taken. Quiet placid the PJ’s just sat their allowing us to appreciate them before calmly swimming off to a nearby spot on the sandy bottom. With low tide we were only down at 17m which enabled some good bottom times for all.

For a number of the divers this was their first dive on the Lena. So from this first encounter, squeals of joy were heard and even some high fives took place. WHAT AN AWESOME START!!!! A number of us were wreck qualified and further explored inside the boat. From the stern through the engine room, other large internal rooms teeming with schools of juvenile dhufish amongst others along to the bow. The boats propeller still intact, provides a protected haven for a number of fish species as well. Coral growth off the side and in some of the internal rooms has increased over the years, so for those with a keen eye, a number of smaller critters such as Nudibranchs were seen.

Our second dive was also met with some additional company of a sting ray, again sitting quietly towards the bow. Some quick shenanigans with some photo opportunities in front of the bow and also up on top of the bow and around the main cabin added some talking points back into the sheltered bays before entering the Bunbury Harbour. Here we shared some great lunch of chicken and meats rolls on fresh crusty bread and Kim’s own home grown tomatoes. Great way to finish off some really good dives down in Bunbury!

If you have never dived the Lena – add it to your list! This is a great dive for all levels with abundant life and so much to see. It just so happens there is another dive this weekend, contact the shop to book your place, NOW!
