Perth Scuba Underwater Festival 2013 Fringe Event

Perth Scuba UF13 Fringe Winners Announced

Perth Scuba UF13 WA Category Winner Pamela SuttonCongratulations to all our Perth UF13 Fringe winners!!!

In our 3rd year now, Perth Scuba in conjunction with the Western Australian Underwater Photographic Society has closed another successful Underwater Festival Fringe Event. This year we again ran our own Western Australian local photography competition with two added categories being Video and International. During the month of September Manta Club and WAUPS members had the opportunity to shoot in WA or International waters, no matter their experience or camera type.

As usual the weather was gorgeous all through August, then the first day of Spring – it went to [email protected] – so we extended the shooting time until 14th October, giving our WA entries an extra 2 weeks to shoot. And WOW – we were all blown away by just how good the entries were overall and with a huge array of different cameras. On Friday 18th October we presented the Top 25 images from both WA and Internationally, then proceeded to announce the winners and award their awesome prizes. Read more & see the photos…

GUE Fundamentals Course Instructor Alex Pawson

Getting to the Fundamentals of Diving

GUE Fundamentals Coursewritten by Joseph Bicanic – Perth Scuba Tec Instructor

Fundies, as the course is affectionately known as, is without a doubt one of the best and most eye opening courses I have ever done. GUE (Global Underwater Explorers) have a rather different approach to Scuba Diver training. Their focus is to first get a Diver to have a certain skill level before going on to the next course. Can you fin / maintain buoyancy / correct equipment? Fundies is taught to non-GUE Divers interested in crossing over to GUE or those interested in another training perspective.

Prior to doing the course my understanding of GUE was that of a regimented system with little flexibility. I was happily proven wrong. In saying that GUE have a reason for everything they do and it just works. Not all Divers would appreciate the finesse of GUE but as an Underwater Videographer and Tec Diver I certainly did. GUE Fundamentals Course

GUE Fundamentals CourseThursday 30 January – Sunday 2 Feb 2014 9:00am – 5:00pm

The GUE Fundamentals course is designed to cultivate the essential skills required by all sound diving practice, irrespective of level or environment. A pre-requisite for all GUE classes, except Recreational Diver level 1 course, GUE Fundamentals performs a three-fold function:

  • it provides the recreational diver, who does not desire further diver training, with an opportunity to advance his/her basic diving skills, thereby developing more comfort, confidence, and competence in the water
  • it provides the diver with aspirations of more advanced diver training with the tools that will contribute to a greater likelihood of success
  • it provides non-GUE trained divers with a gateway to GUE training.

Sound all too technical? It’s about giving you the skills to be an absolute guru of your buoyancy underwater and gain a new level of thinking to improve your diving. Read more…

WA Beach Clean Up South Mole Fremantle

WA Beach Clean Up – Thank you to all our volunteers

FLUORO NIGHT DIVING

What a beautiful day for the South Mole Beach clean up day, it was nice and sunny with flat seas. We had 20 people turn up, with 13 divers and 7 shore crew. The water looked great but the visibility was only about half a meter, but Mark Street and his dive buddy saw 2 dolphins!!!

When the clean up was finished, every one enjoyed the free lunch of BBQ sausages and rolls. I would like to thank everyone that turned up to help, and thanks to Jason for being the dive master and getting all the divers ready. Also thanks for the 3 new divers who came down to help, we hope to see you on our Sunday Club dives!!! Click here for more photos from the day.
