Well, we are now well and truly on our trip and the anticipation is very high… Tomorrow we board our final flight… Destination – San Cristobal – Galapagos Islands.

After The Perth Scuba Crew of 16 finally became complete with the Perth, ACT, Queensland and NSW crews arriving in Auckland to collect our four sheep loving friends, we boarded yet another plane to add to our journey which would make it the second last leg of our 38 hour journey so far. A long way and a lot of laughs on the way (and not one airport arrest!) Thanks Joey!

This flight was into Chile and very cool. As we came into land we had the snow covered Andes mountain range on the right and the ocean on the left. The landing which was actually on schedule – put us on the ground exactly 2 hours after we had taken off… From Sydney! Very weird and there wasn’t a flux capacitor in sight! Just a really strange cross over of the international dateline (Sorry Andy that doesn’t mean you pick up another international date). It was really good because to us it didn’t seem like we’d just spent 2 full days of our lives on various planes. The arrival in Chile gave us just one more flight and a 4 hour stopover to grab a meal and check out the shops in the airport. Confusion on the exchange rates and the $800 cans of coke meant that most of us held back on the major purchases like a drink in case it took out our trip spending money.

We departed and just 4 house later arrived at our overnight destination Guayaquil – Ecuador. After a speedy check in at the Macaw Hostel everyone went straight to bed for some much needed stretch and sleep.

A big congratulations to our newest open water divers! Some for a hobby, some for a change of sport and some required for the job. Either way they we’re very keen to get in the water and be amazed!

And what a weekend to be out in the water. A nicely warmed heated pool to start off with and with the competent learners they were, we had no trouble with skills, we even learned how to blow the perfect ring! Next step was a boat trip out to Rottnest Island and I can honestly say it has been the best weekend at Rotto for the whole winter! The weather at Rottnest was as good as it gets, so warm I even had a sunbake on top deck. The water was perfect! Crystal clear and glass, could not wait to jump in and explore the sites of Rottnest. After we all got sorted we descended down for our first dive. The students smashed out their skills for a good cruise around Parker Point. First dive done and the divers loved it.

After a good lunch on the boat, some good chats and lots of people taking photos of the glorious day, we were ready to get back in the water. You could the bottom it was that clear. After completing our navigation we swam to Secret Cove (no I can’t tell you where it is otherwise it wouldn’t be secret!). It was a glorious dive and we even came back with a new trucker hat and a Jack Daniels bottle that had looked like it’d been there for 50 years. Such a beautiful way to start our open water dives. You know it’s a good day when divers saw turtles, sharks, rays and dolphins!

A couple of the Perth Scuba Crew braved the near arctic conditions last Wednesday night to dive The Coombe.

Other than the occasional ice berg, we saw some pretty bigs crabs, prawns cobbler and flathead. Visibility was surprisingly good and 19m depth with a safety stop was also a good change.

Thanks to Adam Booth and Mike Wong for some good company.

Editor’s Note:

Joey and Lee were most upset they missed The Coombe dive as they departed for the Galapagos Islands… Really, really upset we promise!

Adam Booth said “ha ha ha i didnt feel a thing in my dry suit, felt a bit like summer but yes thanks to Brett and Mike for a nice dive”

The Perth Scuba Galapagos Crew… So were looking forward to diving The Coombe instead of the Galapagos Islands but we were kidnapped by bandits (Lee and Joey) and forced to go diving in this world heritage area… Sorry!

Don’t forget to join the crew for next Wednesday’s night dive. Give us a call on 9455 4448 to find out where we’ll be heading. Don’t have a buddy? Don’t worry, we’ll find you one on the night! Don’t forget to bring a torch!!!
