Prawn Watch Project

6:30 pm

The Swan River Trust, Challenger Institute, WA Fish Foundation, Murdoch University and the Department of Fisheries are working together to pilot restocking the western school prawn in the Swan Canning Riverpark.

Prawning

The River Park prawning season starts on 1 November 2013 and the Trust and its partners are seeking the help of 30 keen, knowledgeable volunteers to help catch western school prawn broodstock for culture purposes. This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in a world first project to help increase the population of river prawns in the Swan and Canning rivers.

Experienced prawners, fishermen, divers and individuals with an interest in aquaculture or those undertaking relevant tertiary studies, are encouraged to register as volunteers for the Prawn Watch project.

Volunteers will help scientists catch western school prawn broodstock for a few hours in the evening (one night per week or fortnight) from November 2013 through to April 2014. All volunteers will receive a VIP members pack including a logbook, Keep Cup, stubbie holders and a copy of RiverView magazine upon registration. Broodstock collectors will be selected from the pool of volunteers available and will be recognised as official Prawn Watch volunteers with the Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Volunteers must be aged more than 18 years, have their own transport and demonstrate a minimum level of fitness to be involved. Those interested in participating should attend our upcoming Prawn Watch Information and Training evening.

Come and celebrate the opening of the Riverpark prawning season and enjoy some yummy prawns and finger food for supper.

Date:  Thursday 17 October
Venue:  Royal Perth Yacht Club
