Underwater Festival 2013

Perth Scuba and WAUPS are once again joining forces for the Underwater Festival 2013 with our very own Fringe Event. With the tagline ‘The Australasia Challenge’ it incorporates an Australasia-wide simultaneous photo and video shootout competition like no other with over $100,000 in prizes. Plus, you’ll be able to enter the Perth local competition to win great prizes!

UF13 features a shootout competition that happens simultaneously all over Australasia – 25 countries spanning both hemispheres – every dive you can imagine is a shootout locality during the month of September. You could dive your local favourite spots, go out to Rottnest Island or shore dive with your buddy along the coast of WA.

Hundreds of divers will be part of this huge event and not unlike an underwater ‘Earth Hour’ help to highlight the underwater beauty but also the underwater issues of this fantastic bioregion and help to show the world what we’ve got to lose.

Check out the Underwater Snapshot Map – currently showing the location and a thumbnail version of selected 2012 event entries from around the region.

Please check out last year’s Winning Photos and Winning Videos and you can see other entries from any of the photographers that have made it into the top100 by clicking on their name.

Events kicked off at Perth Scuba on Friday 30th August @ 7pm. We joined for a presentation of the UF13 rules, local competition rules and prizes, how to enter the competition and all the exciting events planned for the month of September – including gear trials, workshops, presentations and more. For further details keep an eye on the WAUPS and Perth Scuba Facebook Pages.

Underwater Photography Competition – Australasia Challenge

The 2013 Underwater Festival™ continues along the same lines of the past 2 years with a regional underwater shootout competition. Like in 2012, UF13 features a photo and video shootout competition that happens simultaneously all over Australasia.

Mark your calendar – 1 month to shoot – from the 1st to the 30th of September 2013.

25 countries spanning both hemispheres – every dive site you can imagine is a shootout locality, every dive centre, liveaboard, dive resort in the area can facilitate this new kind of shootout. You can dive your local favourite spots, go out with your dive club or shore dive with your buddy – or travel and join in one of the many Underwater Festival Fringe Events that happen all over Australasia.

Since the term Australasia is not very clearly defined, we decided to include all countries that are part of underwater australasia.

Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, Cook Islands, East Timor, Fiji, French Polynesia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Federated States of Micronesia, Myanmar, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Tonga, Vanuatu, Vietnam

Become part of this huge event and not unlike an underwater ‘Earth Hour’ help to highlight the underwater beauty but also the underwater issues of this fantastic bioregion and help to show the world what we’ve got to lose.

Underwater Festival Categories

Categories for the 2013 Underwater Festival shootout include regional, technology based and subject based classifications. Many photos will fit in more than one category and you will have the choice when submitting. We kept them inline with the 2012 Festival for better comparison except for the addition of the mobile phone category in both photo and video. There might be some changes still in these categories as we move closer to the 2013 event so please keep your eyes on this page and email us with comments and suggestions.

Western Australian Underwater Photographic Society

The West Australian Underwater Photographic Society (WAUPS) is a non-profit organisation which was established and incorporated in January, 1984.

The aims of the Society are:

  • To promote an improvement of underwater photography amongst it’s members
  • To promote underwater photography in the community
  • To encourage an understanding and preservation of the marine environment
  • To promote an exchange of skills and ideas from within the society and from external bodies
  • To have fun and enjoy socialising, diving and photography

WAUPS holds regular monthly meetings, a range of competitions, monthly photo dives, dive trips, exhibitions and social events. WAUPS members also get membership to the WA Photographic Federation and can participate in their events and trips.

We communicate to members through an e-news bulletin twice a month, a bi-monthly printed newsletter and Facebook – these keep members up-to-date with our activities, forthcoming national and international competitions, technical information and local news.

Western Australian Underwater Photographic Society – Digital Gallery
