Cooling off at Point Peron after the warmest August day on record

Manta Club divers at Point Peron

Maybe it was the warmest August day ever on record for Perth that had eleven divers stampeding to cool themselves off this evening. What ever it was, it just got better and better as the amazing flat calm conditions at Point Peron led to an amazing sunset, dolphins in the shallows then the milkyway spread wide across the sky as we kitted up. Over the hill from the car park we dropped into amazing visibility which outstretched anyone’s torch beam.

Heading off over the seagrass beds with my buddy we encountered a multitude of tennis ball sized young Shaws Cowfish that we so cute, then suddenly came across a Weedy Seadragon rocking gently too-and-fro among the weed, just amazing hanging there spotlighted in our crossed torch beams. Having burned half the camera batteries shooting this beautiful, truly gob smacking amazing creature from every angle (even after +50 encounters i’m still overawed with them), we spent half and hour exploring a maze of caves, swim throughs and mini lagoons out to 10m before returning back over the reef to the inner seagrass beds once more.

Along the way we saw several Old Wifes, Bluespotted Goatfish, Sea Sweeps and Buffalo Bream.  Despite scouring the area we didn’t find any more dragons but did stumble upon a pair of Pyjama squid heads locked with tentacles intertwined in the throws of their carnal business. Stories in the car park included sightings of a giant ray, more dolphins and numerous crayfish.

First time night divers and regulars all busy exchanging stories, past experiences and having a laugh…. there’s just aren’t many better ways of spending an evening dressed in neoprene and sober….
