Laughing manically into our regulators at Bicton Baths

Laughing manically into our regulators at Bicton Baths

Manta Club divers
Manta club divers have gone a little nuts in the rain

Horizontal thrashing rain isn’t something I actively seek out, but whilst standing there chest deep, about to dump the air from my BCD, laughing manically into my regulator…I would not have swapped it for all the beer in Northbridge this last Wednesday night. And thankfully two other nutters also share a similar love for extreme weather diving and after allowing a generous two minutes past 7pm in case of late comers, we made a rapid retreat to the tranquil 16m depths off Bicton Baths.

OK so the viz wasn’t fantastic but was a consistent 3m all the way down, and with only a slight compensation needed for the incoming left-right current, a NW bearing took us directly to the cabin cruiser wreck. Straight away we encounter a pyjama squid which after a brief pose for photos, then vanished  in a puff of mud, leaving just two little eyes poking out of the substrate as the fall out settled.

Drive safely (or should that be dive safely?)

A search around the base of the wreck didn’t turn up any other PJs but we were treated to numerous Cobbler, Six spine and Fanbelly Leatherjackets, Smooth Boxfish, a cuttlefish and several squid. Heading out from the wreck I was hunting for that perfect macro shot of a Mantis shrimp’s amazing eye and totally missed the good sized stingray my two buddies came across.

With the current suddenly picking up pace around the 50 minute mark, it was time to make a prompt exit. A bearing straight to the shore brought us back to sideways tree bending winds and the madness of simultaneously wrestling a towel,  indecent exposure and not loosing the car door. Forget your teak veneered luxury dive charter boats, this is real diving!
