What’s going on at Perth Scuba?

Written by Lee Johnson

Spring is here and you can already see the divers starting to get their gear out of storage for the new season.

With 24 degrees this weekend and with 28 forecast for Monday – why wouldn’t you be out there? Visibility is very good in most places and we’ve even had our super guru Instructor Mike tell us that the Viz at Rockingham Wreck trail last week was 15m!

Don’t forget to make sure your dive gear is all ready and serviced for the new season. There is always a rush just towards the start of the season to get cylinders and regs ready to go so try and beat the rush and bring your gear in early.

The Great Aussie Fundraiser – NEXT SUNDAY! REGISTER NOW.Perth Scuba Underwater Cleanup

As you all know by now Tommy and Allan are wheeling their way around OZ with 2 things on their minds… Cleaning up our beaches and waterways and raising money for Project AWARE. Perth Scuba is holding the big WA clean up event along with Dive Ski & Surf at theFishingBoatHarbourin Fremantle. The event kicks off at 9am and we are looking for as many volunteers as possible to assist in the clean up which will also be used as an event to collect money for Project AWARE on the day.

There is a raffle with some great prizes as well as a sausage sizzle afterwards at around 12 noon. Tommy & Allan will be on hand as well as some of the TV news networks. So – Your chance to become a TV star and do the right thing on what we are sure is going to be another fantastic day in the water! If you can’t make it but would like to contribute to the event, you can purchase raffle tickets, or drop in a donation in the Project AWARE Tin at Perth Scuba. Any amount will help prove that WA is the most generous state. We also aim to beat last years effort of sending 24 divers into the water with one giant stride entry to kick off at 9.30am Make sure you are there to be in the photo!

The Underwater festival is well and truly in full swing at Perth Scuba with some big names presenting in our theatre. Shannon Conway kicked things off last Friday night with over 70 keen photographers and videographers cruising in for the night’s festivities. There were various presentations and some great prizes up for grabs in Perth Scuba’s local competition as well as over $150,000 worth of prizes for the overall Australasian event. Scubapro, PADI and Allways Dive Travel and Shannon Conway himself donated some cool prizes for the local competition which will be decided next week. We will have a bunch of photographs of the winners in next weeks newsletter. The cameras have been snapping everywhere with some very good images being sent in for the big prize pool. All the best to those who have entered. Special thanks go out to all at WAUPS (Western Australian Underwater Photography Society) and to the guest speakers who have made very valuable and interesting contributions to our Fringe event.

For those of you who missed out or would like to know who you saw on the presentations – Here they are in order of the presentations they did:

Shannon Conway – How to take a winning photograph.

Joseph Bicanic – Introducing Underwater Videography

Peter Nicholas  – Underwater Models

Daniel Messom– The Basics of Underwater Photography

Patrick Baker – Ship Wreck photography in 3D

Ian Robertson – Composition in Underwater Photography

A Huge thanks again to these very talented people for sharing their knowledge and inspiring us all.
