This Sunday 2nd November 2014 Perth Scuba’s club dive was a little different with the club joining other dive clubs down at Point Peron for Perth’s annual Giant Dive.

Run by Pete Dawson of Indi dive this great event raises money for good causes, where divers sign up for the day at a cost of $10 with the money raised this year going to Sea Shepherd Australia. A non-profit conservation organisation whose mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world’s oceans.

It was a great turn out with 65 divers taking part, looking to make it over 100 at next years event, however it wasn’t the best turn out from the Perth Scuba club members with only 5 of us taking part (Ed’s Note – slackers, where were you all?!?), next year however it will be good to see every club member show up to absolutely smash the 100 mark.

It was a great day with beautiful flat clear warm water for divers. There was an underwater treasure hunt with prizes ranging from bottles of wine, cd’s, hats and t-shirts. After the dive there was coin toss games to win some bottles of Johnnie Walker.

Then came the raffle draws with plenty of prizes involved which included some fantastic prizes donated by the ever generous Perth Scuba which included hats, t-shirts, mugs and gift vouchers for an Advanced open water course with e-learning and also a Digital underwater photography course as well, both prizes being won by 2 very grateful and excited people.

The 3rd gift voucher donated by Perth Scuba which was a Rescue course with e-learning was used as an auction item to raise extra money for Sea Shepard instead of being given away in the raffle. The lucky winner of this voucher had a great bid of $250 which was a good boost in donations for the day putting the total donations to just over $1500.

It was a great day in all for a great cause and we can only hope next year will be bigger and better with well over 100 people joining and raising money for another fantastic organisation helping to protect and conserve our oceans. Want to nominate a worthy organisation? Contact the Perth Scuba Crew to let us know what you think should be supported in the 2015 Giant Dive.

Hope to see you all next week for the club dive where we will be heading off to North Coogee Marina wall for a great dive after a yummy BBQ breaky.
