Looking for big prawns at Bicton Baths

written by Dane Fielder – Perth Scuba PADI Dive Master

We all arrived down at Bicton baths around the seven o’clock mark on Wednesday 20 August 2014, all keen and ready to catch some prawns and crabs. Once we kitted up, took the photo and I delivered my dive brief we made our way to the water. After dumping the dive flag and setting our compass’s to the shore we kicked out on our backs until we reached the boats. Once at the boats we made our descent to the bottom and headed out as a group in a big line looking for prawns. It wasn’t until we got to about 14m we started to spot and catch some. After about forty minutes of chasing prawns, looking for sized crabs (only found two), loosing each other then finding each other again we made our way back to shore using our compass. On the way back in a medium sized sting ray was spotted following us in, jealous of all our prawns I’m guessing.
On the dive we also saw plenty of crabs, prawns, baby rays, cobbler, starfish, squid and plenty of baby flat head.
Not bad for a Winters night!
