Port Jackson shark chills out at the chicken coop

written by Dane Fielder – Perth Scuba PADI Dive Master

We all arrived at Palm beach on Wednesday 27 August 2014 to see a low tide and a jetty full of fishermen, so the decision was made to move over to the wreck trail once everyone had arrived.

Once everyone kitted up, took a snap and I delivered my dive brief we made our way out to our descent point. Once we descended we followed the rope to the first boat wreck which was full of juvenile snapper. After a couple of laps we moved on to the tyre stack which had a couple of resident lion fish, one of them was by far the biggest I’ve seen. After that we made our way over to the first plane wreck where we spotted another lion fish and a few other not so interesting locals. We then made our way to the second plane but it didn’t have much life around it.

We then surfaced and the decision was made to surface swim to the chicken coop buoy, once at the buoy we descended down to 8m to find a little Port Jackson shark (500mm) that was more than happy to swim about and chill out with us. After a couple of laps we moved on to the deep boat wreck which sat at about 16.5m. On the way we spotted plenty of sea horse on the ropes, a nice sized stone fish and also a eel chilling under the rope. After checking out the schools of fish hanging out inside the boat wreck we made our way back to the shore using our compass. We had a great winter dive, make sure you guys can make it next time!
