PERTH SCUBA photography competition winners!!!
We would like to apologise for the delay in releasing the names of the winners of our 2010 Photography competition. We received a few comments regarding the way the winners were to be selected and after investigating the comments, we decided that the final results could be swayed in the direction of the most active person or friends of the person who had submitted the photograph, making it unfair to the other entries in the competition. We at Perth Scuba felt that this annual competition which has been growing and the quality of photographs submitted has been getting better every year, should be judged in a fair manner to give everyone a chance to win. This year the level of quality photographs has raised the bar for future competitions with some fantastic photographs with both compacts and DSLR cameras. We are sure with the emergence of “EVIL” Cameras over the next 12 months, there will be even more spectacular photographs being taken.
This year’s winners have been judged by Lee and Joey. Joey as you all know, is a great photographer and has taken all aspects of photography into account with the decision process. Degree of difficulty of both the subject and location, type of shot, type of equipment used to take the shot, post shot processing, composition and lighting.
First Place – Dean Eldrid
Congratulations Dean on your magnificent photograph of the Jetty at the Borneo Divers Mabul Resort at sunset. Dean, for your gorgeous efforts, you’ve won a Scubapro Everdry 4 Drysuit valued at $1595. We look forward to seeing you to collect your prize!
Lee and Joey chose this photo for First because of several reasons:
When you first glance at this photo it has that WOW factor. The gorgeous blue of the water with the matching sky, contrasted with the orange timber of the jetty is quite pleasing to the eye.
The use of the leading lines of the jetty pillons draws the eye from the left hand side into the photo and towards the shore. The details of the wood are crisp and you can even see the wood grain. The shot is exposed well with the details of the brightly lit jetty not overpowering the darker island and sky.
The depth of field is great giving you as much as possible in focus of the shot and gradually blurring in the distance.
Well done Dean, it’s a lovely photo and over 100 people on Facebook agreed :) We look forward to seeing many more photos from you in the future… Especially when you get that SLR of yours in a housing!
Second Place – Daniel Welfare
Congratulations Daniel on your photo of the reef split with the surface of your live aboard vessel in The Red Sea, Egypt. You’ve won “A Day with a Pro” – no, not that kind Dan! – you get an exclusive one on one course with our resident award winning photographer Gary Brennand valued at $550. He’ll give you your own personal tuition on how to take even better photos and use your camera to the limits of its abilities… Gary knows how to make the most of his photographs to enter and win world wide photography competitions and he can help you!
Lee and Joey chose this photo for Second because of several reasons:
I’d have to say that the degree of difficulty of this shot was definitely a contributing factor to Dan’s photo rating so highly. For anyone that’s ever tried to take a half-half shot, it’s not the easiest thing in the world – and what’s even better is that Dan took this with a compact!
The foreground is clearly in focus and the natural light coming through the surface of the water gives the coral its colour. The foreground is also well exposed with the reflection on the surface of the water showing the colourful reef through it.
The depth of field could have been better as the vessel in the background is slightly blurred, although, this is largely due to a water spot on the lens. The vessel and sky is also slightly over exposed, therefore losing some of the detail and colour in the sky.
Well done Dan, it’s a shot that’s very difficult to get and over 100 people on Facebook agreed :) We look forward to seeing many more photos from you! Call us on 9455 4448 to book your exclusive one on one Underwater Photography course.
Third Place – Dawn Scotson

Congratulations Dawn for winning Third Prize with your photo of a school of Barracuda at Sipadan Island in Borneo, Malaysia. You’ve won a Scubapro Sea Wing Nova Fin, Mask & Snorkel Package – in white – briliant for manual white balancing!!!
Lee and Joey chose this photo for Third because of several reasons:
This photo was taken with a small Canon compact camera with only the internal flash for lighting. The contrast is good and the silver fish are lit well and not over exposed as can sometimes be an issue.
The focus looks sharp and Dawn’s swum nice and close to get this shot and to get the fish lit well.
Good work Dawn, you’re doing really well with your photographs and we look forward to seeing more from you in the near future.
