On Sunday 12th August, Josh had the pleasure of leading the club dive to The Coombe at Mosman Bay. We’d seen the weather report and with a severe weather warning for anything south of Mandurah, we thought it prudent to dive in a sheltered spot in the Swan River.

Just in front of The Coombe Reserve (end of The Coombe, Mosman Bay) are two shallow wrecks (10-12m deep) and two deep wrecks (20-22m deep). This dive site is a super easy entry off the slowly sloping sand and an easy swim out to buoy #221. This is where we descended down the mooring line and arrived on top of the 10m wreck. Once we explored this wreck we moved on a bearing of 355º towards the 12m wreck. This wreck is larger than the first and we found a variety of critters in the nooks and crannies of its hull.

Half the crew were looking for the more advanced deep wrecks. So off they went in search with a long surface swim that’s well worth the effort – if you find it! From the concrete pipe at the corner of The Coombe Reserve, surface swim 240m following a bearing of 340º to buoy #532 (mistakenly printed as #352). Descend down the mooring line to 21m and then swim a distance of 15m along a 60º bearing to the 22m barge. This is a large boat so you’ll need plenty of time to explore…. If you find it that is!

The weather held out for us just long enough to get out of the water, de-kit and get changed before it bucketed down – yippee! Then we followed up with a visit to the Left Bank for a drink and lunch. One never misses the opportunity to share a pub lunch with a good bunch of people.

Thank you to Drew, Alex, Michael, Leanne, Jocelyn, Brett, Tom, Rowan and even LEE for joining us on a fun day out – who would’ve thought the Swan River would have so much to offer. Never dived the river? Whilst the viz isn’t fantastic it is still filled with the weird and wonderful.

Finley Project Aware Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course
Exploring Marmion Marine Park
Advanced Open Water Diver Course

Last Sunday 19th August, we met at 8:30am at Perth Scuba for our FREE Sunday Morning Shore Dive. This week Joey led the way to the Marmion Marine Park. The weather was perfect for a jaunt north of the river.

To dive this site it needs to be a calm day with no breeze or an Easterly with minimal swell. Sunday’s weather was just that!

To get to the dive site, the crew snorkelled out between the two areas of reef. Once we passed the shallows, we descended and followed the back wall of the reef. The site itself consists of limestone pillars, walls, undercuts, gullies and swim throughs.

The best marine life is found under the overhangs in the reef. One of the crew even saw a Port Jackson shark crusing past him on the sand. The walls are covered in invertebrate life with gorgonian fans, colourful sponges and squishy ascidians. Shools of buffalo bream and wrasse were in their dozens plus a few shy lion fish were stalking the smaller fish.

The entry on this site can be difficult due to concealed rocky outcrops in the surf. But all the crew had no problems at all! Especially with Finley looking on to make sure they all got in and out of the water safely. Missed out on a beautiful day of diving? To get out to this spot again, watch the forecast and the swell must be below a metre and the wind below 10 knots.

Exploration, Excitement, Experiences. They’re what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about. And no, you don’t have to be “advanced” to take it – it’s designed so you can go straight into it after your Open Water course.

The Advanced Open Water Diver course helps you increase your confidence and build your scuba skills so you can become more comfortable in the water. This is a great way to get more dives under your belt while continuing to learn under the supervision of our Perth Scuba Instructor’s.

This course builds on what you’ve learned and develops new capabilities by introducing you to new activities and new ways to have fun scuba diving.  You’ll complete 5 fun dives that include Underwater Navigation (save on those long surface swims to the boat!), Deeper Diving (learn the skills to get to 30 metres and back!), plus a Night Dive (how else would you spend your weeknights?), and two more exciting dives to choose!

Our next course is kicking off on the evening of Friday 24th August. Want to join us for a fun dive course that will improve your skills and build your underwater confidence? Contact us now and you can jump into the blue with our qualified Perth Scuba Instructors.
