Back a few years ago when LED torches first came out, people laughed at me when I told them the first generation LED torches would be nothing in comparison to “powered LED” torches. I had been lucky enough to have come across an article written by a company who were researching the new type of LED lights even before the first LEDs had made their mark in replacing HID and Halogen globes in torches.
The company boasted that they could produce a light 200 times brighter than a standard LED (I laughed too). That was in 2002. 10 years on and I look back on those days and how torches for diving and lighting for underwater videography and photography have changed because of this “new” technology.
This week we were given a new toy to play with from our friends at Sub Gear… The Sub Gear SP30 LED Dive Torch.

Perth Scuba announces a new destination to our travel line up!
We’re headed to Brunei, home of wrecks, reef and rigs! Some wrecks are as old as the 1800’s with new additions as recent as 1995 to explore. The reef is full exceptional fish and coral life. The rigs are something else entirely, full of soft corals, tunicates, sea fans and schooling fish! The rigs are old decommissioned oil platforms that have been reused as a complex reef structure to house new marine life.
It’s not just the diving that’s led us to Brunei… The accommodation is top notch! You’ll enjoy a beautiful hotel with gorgeous rooms, swimming pools and even a golf course! You return to your room after your dives overlooking the ocean and gorgeous gardens. You can relax by the pool whilst enjoying a tropical drink after your “hard” day exploring the oceans wonders.

Sunday 14th October 2012 8.30am (Cleanup Dive)
Help keep our beaches beautiful by joining the Perth Scuba volunteers already registered in the great WA Beach Cleanup on Sunday October 14.
We want to help protect the marine environment from the harm of marine debris. After our recent club dive to the area we understand how much help the South Mole beach needs from divers and non-divers alike. You can get involved by joining our clean up at South Mole Beach, Fremantle.
Bring your hat, sunscreen, catchbag, sturdy gloves AND your dive gear to help us cleanup this local beach. Contact us to register as a volunteer and we’ll send you all the details so you can help! Meet the crew at the Fleet Street side of South Mole beach, Fremantle near the Challenger TAFE at 8:30am.
Thanks for keeping Australia beautiful!
Wednesday 17th October 2012 7.00pm (Shore Dive)
Meet at Jerrat Drive, East Fremantle for a free shore dive. The dive site at Jerrat Drive is located out from the Scout jetty where you can find two wrecks, a WWII army landing craft and a Japanese junk. The landing craft is large and well worn but has lots of holes to peek inside at the inhabitants. The junk rises about 2 metres above the river bed and is more interesting. Both wrecks can be found in just over 9 metres, meaning there’s plenty of time to check them out thoroughly!
Don’t forget to bring your torch OR you can hire a Light & Motion Sola Light! Call us to secure trying this small & super bright light. Give us a call on 9455 4448 to let us know you’ll be there.
Sunday 21st October 2012 8:30am (Shore Dive)
Meet the Perth Scuba Crew at the shop in Canning Vale for your FREE BBQ breakfast, followed by a drive to the dive spot of the day – this time it’s Palm Beach Jetty.
Palm Beach Jetty is located just south of the Rockingham Wreck Trail. As the name implies there’s a new jetty located there. It’s starting to get some good coral growth and critters around the pilons. Plus, if you head across the sand you can find some very weird and wonderful inhabitants. Whilst sand might not sound interesting, keep a sharp eye out for the fascinating and different.
Don’t forget to bring your camera – and if you’re lucky you may even be buzzed by the dolphins that chase the schooling fish just past the end of the jetty!
Friday 26th October 2012 7:00pm (Perth Scuba Theatre)
