So, it was with great reluctance that my arm was twisted, my hair pulled, and I was thrown bound and gagged into a plane to head off for the warm waters of Raja Ampat… Yeah right! (on second thought that sounds more like a chapter of Fifty Shades…)
Last week I returned from a 10 day journey cruising along the coast of Raja Ampat. This was a bit of an exploratory trip where we sought out new dive sites and hit a couple of old favourites. Our first stop of the journey was in the Dampier Strait where we descended on a very aptly named Manta Spa. This wasn’t like most those other dive sites that are named “Shark Point” and there’s not one shark to see or “Turtle Wall” and you’re lucky if you find a nudibranch! When they said Manta Spa they meant Manta Spa!!! The site is a Manta cleaning station (hence the name) and the big fellas cruise on in to get their wings cleaned by the little cleaner wrasse. They were BIG and quite happy to come in close to the camera. This was my first try of my 15mm fish eye and the Manta’s helped me out by coming in less than a metre from my dome port!
It was great to watch these huge fish cruise in lazily and spin around us as they got cleaned. They weren’t bothered by the divers bubbles at all and they put on a great show for all the crew. The dive site wasn’t just good for the Manta Rays, but we also found a couple of wobbegong, one lazing on the sand and the other sitting in a coral bombie waiting for unsuspecting fish. Sunday 2nd December 2012 8.30am (FREE Shore Dive)
Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a FREE Shore Dive to the best dive spot of the day. The weather is looking for a dive on the Gareenup wreck off the North Mole. Gareenup was a steel barge which was employed hauling coal when she broke up and sank just off the North Mole, Fremantle. The wreck settled on the sandy bottom in 9 metres of water and what’s left is essentially a steel box.
Plus, you may even be lucky and find a crayfish or two in the rocks along the mole – so bring your gloves, bag & loop if you’re looking for a feed! All levels of divers are welcome and we’d love to have you join us.
Wednesday 5th December 2012 7.00pm (FREE Night Dive)
Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a FREE Night Dive to the Kwinana Grain Terminal. This is a macro site for lovers of nudibranchs but can be visited by large schools of snapper, the occasional sea lion and even penquins! If you are lucky you may even see a shark chasing snapper. Octupus, sea horses, schools of herring and lots of colourful growth on the Pylons, sponges, soft coral and sea slugs, tube worms etc.
The weather is looking AWESOME after the last week of yuck – so get out there and enjoy a beautiful night under the water! Give us a call on 9455 4448 to let us know you’ll be there. Don’t forget your torch!

It’s all in good fun. Santa will be handing out Christmas presents and one lucky person will “win” a special Christmas present – don’t worry it doesn’t involve a cup…
Here’s what you get… 4 Hours of unlimited nibblies, drinks including – Beer, House Wine, Spirits and Cocktails – And YES the famous lethal “Joey Shots” will be there!!! Cost: $85 per ticket.
Tickets can be purchased at Perth Scuba in store or by calling 9455 4448. Click here to purchase your Christmas Party Ticket online.
Sunday 9th December 2012 12.00noon (FREE Sleep-in Dive)
Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a greasy lunch after our giant Christmas Party the evening before! Then we’ll head out for a fun shore dive that’s easy on those tired eyes. We’ll be heading down to Point Peron where the entry is easy and you may even get buzzed by a dolphin!
You can choose to dive directly in front of the carpark where there’s a small sand patch that gives you access to the South side of the point. The point is very shallow so you’ll need to be careful. If you follow the path from the West side of the point this provides easy access to a more sheltered and deeper dive. Point Peron is littered with kelp, but if you look carefully you’ll find loads of caves and swim throughs that have many critters hiding within their depths.
Expect to find lots of old wives, bulleyes, southern coral fish, blue devils and wrasses under the overhangs. All levels of divers are welcome so please feel free to join us at Perth Scuba.
Wednesday 12th December 2012 7.00pm (FREE Night Dive)
Meet the Perth Scuba Crew at the South Mole for an exploration of the rocks and sea grass at night. The weirdest critters come out at night so don’t miss a fun night out.
