written by Lee Johnson – Perth Scuba Managing Director
Well 2012 draws to a close, we can look back and reflect on what was another awesome year and as always – action packed!
Other than to say we did dive trips to Borneo, Galapagos, Wakatobi, Ningaloo, Komodo, Jurien Bay, Esperance, Busselton, Albany and Mt Gambier, the year is best said in pictures rather than words.
Over the last 12 months we have had 104 Club Dives, 6 weekenders, 3 Beach Clean Up Days, raised heaps of $$ for Project AWARE, Presented 3 Travel, 2 Go Pro and 1 Crayfish Awareness Information night, certified nearly 1000 divers at all levels, introduced to the world 11 new Dive Instructors, 34 new Dive Masters and became a PADI Career Development Centre (The only one in WA). We became the Scubapro Australian Dealer of the year for the 7th consecutive year and for the first time ever – became the Scubapro Global Dealer of the Year!
On the staff front we saw the arrival of Joshua Phillips (Retail Store Manager), Joey Pool (Social Media, Marketing and Advertising), Glen Outhred (Dive Shop Rousty) Alex Pawson (Dive Instructor), Andy Goddard (Back from the Police) and the return of Amba Parker (Perth Scuba Accounts). We also saw the departure of Jodie Bond who became engaged and moved to Townsville (Congrats and happy birthday Jodes!), 2012 also saw the departure of Andy Goddard (Back to the Police?), Mike Doswell, Nat Correia, Marc van der Poel and Trish from Perth Scuba Accounts.
It has been an eventful year and as I said previously the best way to share these events and club activities, is to do it all with pictures… so let the show begin by clicking here.
Thank you all for a fantastic year, awesome memories, great friendships, amazing diving and the best support ever! None of this would be possible without each and every one of you. Perth Scuba will continue to grow with and because of you.
I, Joey, Robert and the Perth Scuba Crew would like to thank you all and wish you all the best for the New Year.
Let 2013 be bigger and better than 2012!

Busselton Jetty is a 2 kilometre long wooden jetty situated adjacent to the tourist town of Busselton, 275 kilometres south of Perth in Western Australia. The original structure was built in 1865 to service whaling ships. The best diving is at the end of the jetty. Jetty pylons stand like tall trees, each populated with a vibrant mixture of corals and temperate water invertebrate like nudibranchs. Schools of yellowtail scad and pike often hang like clouds. You’ll also discover starfish, crabs, shrimp, shellfish and small non-pelagic fish such as blennies, clingfish and other gobies. Occasionally, jewfish and samson fish zoom through. And if you’re extremely lucky, you may catch sight of a dolphin. The Busselton Jetty is a photographer’s underwater paradise. With a maximum depth of only 8 metres, even a novice diver can enjoy a long bottom time.
Join the Perth Scuba Crew on Sunday 17th February to dive the Jetty – click here to book.

Wednesday 2nd January 2013 7:00pm (FREE Shore Night Dive)
Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a night dive to BHP JETTY. Meet Lee & Joey at the car park at the end of Risely Road, Kwinana @ 7pm. Don’t forget to bring your torch!
Sunday 6th January 2013 8:30am (FREE Shore Dive)
Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a dive checking out JERVOISE BAY. Meet us at Perth Scuba at 8:30am for a free BBQ breakfast followed by a drive to the dive site of the day.
The entry involves a very short walk with an easy entry from the old jetty. You start at the jetty in about 3-4m over a sandy bottom with good visibility. As you swim along the rock wall the bottom falls away to about 6m and visibility typically drops off at this point. The depth gradually reaches 11m after about a 30min swim. You won’t cover this whole dive site in one dive – it’s 700m long!
The rock wall contains lots of caves, at least one is big enought to swim into. The bottom is very flat and featureless so it’s the rock wall you’ll be watching. Around the rock you’ll find schools of buffalo bream, numerous small fish, morwongs, wrass, leatherjacket plus SEAHORSES! Plus expect to see nudibranchs, ascidians, and cuttlefish!
Wednesday 9th January 2013 7:00pm (FREE Shore Night Dive)
Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a FREE Night Dive. We’ll meet at the Dive Site at 7pm – this time we’re descending on JERRAT DRIVE, located in East Fremantle.
The site is just out from the scout jetty on Jerrat Drive where you’ll find two wrecks. A WWII landing craft and a Chinese junk. The landing craft is large and well worn but has many little holes to peek inside. The Chinese junk rises about 2m above the riverbed and is more interesting, but visit both on the one dive. Both wrecks are in a depth of 9.5m and you’re best off finding the landing craft first.
BEWARE: Currents can be quote strong so remember to be careful and be wary of boats overhead.
Sunday 13th January 2013 7:30am (FREE Shore Dive)
We’re heading north so this week meet at YANCHEP DOG BEACH! Turn onto Lagoon Drive from Marmion Avenue and then right onto Brazier Road. Follow the road around until you get to a small lay by just before Leonard Way opposite the bus shelter. The Perth Scuba Crew will meet you there.
This is a fair weather shore dive touted for crays but don’t get too excited as they are mostly under-size or very well concealed but there are a few well over size too towards the outer edge but not on the outer edge of the reef. If the sea has been calm for a few days you’ll get good Viz.
If the weather isn’t calm enough to go to the Dog Beach, we’ll drive around to the Lagoon for an explore. We WON’T be meeting at the shop this time, we’ll meet you at the dive site bright and early.
Wednesday 30 January 2013 7:00pm (FREE Egypt Tour Info Night)
Perth Scuba is travelling to Egypt in 2015 and if you’re thinking of joining us or want to learn more about the trip – come to our FREE Information Evening. We’ll present what’s included in your awesome EGYPT dive and sight seeing adventure and answer your questions – all welcome!
