On Sunday 6th January 2013, Joey & Ken headed down to Bunbury to try out diving on the Lena Wreck.

Apprehended by the Australian Navy in February 2002 while fishing illegally for Patagonian Toothfish in Australian waters the Lena now provides a unique dive wreck only 3 nautical miles from the coast in Bunbury Western Australia. Bunbury is only 178 km and a comfortable 2 hour drive south from Perth. The Lena was sunk as a dive wreck on Friday 19th December 2003 – and since that time a huge variety of corals and fish have made it their home.

We arrived at the Jetty at 8:00am ready for our two dives in Bunbury, unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating with the a southerly blowing through and rain pelting down. So our friendly skipper Kim told us to go and chill out at a coffee shop and wait until 9:00am to see if the storm would blow itself out – which it did!

So we loaded the gear onto the boat and headed off for a short 30 minute ride to the wreck. We pulled up and geared up quickly to descend on this 55m wreck. The viz wasn’t too bad considering the storm that blew through at a reasonable 10 metres. The wreck is in only 18 metres of water so you have PLENTY of time to explore every nook and cranny without getting close to deco or running out of air. We explored for 60 minutes on our first dive and a further 50 minutes on our second.

There was loads to see with beautiful hard corals, colourful soft corals all over the hull and plenty of fish life. It’s very easy to penitrate the wreck with plenty of space so you don’t kick any silt into your buddies face.

Sunday 13 January 2013 8:30am (FREE Shore Dive)

Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a dive to KWINANA GRAIN TERMINAL. All are welcome to join us for this free shore dive, including a BBQ breakfast cooked by our crew at the shop.

The dive site consists of the mussel beds to the North East and South West fo the Jetty (These are clearly marked by floating buoys) and the pylons on which the grain conveyor is built. The Jetty is approximately 650m long from the high water mark to the loading dock. The ground is gentle sloping sandy bottom.

This is a macro site for lovers of nudibranchs but can be visited by large schools of snapper, the occasional sea lion and even penquins! If you are lucky you may even see a shark predating on snapper. Octupus, sea horses, schools of herring and lots of colourful growth on the Pylons, sponges, soft coral and sea slugs, tube worms etc.

Wednesday 16 January 2013 6:30pm (Rottnest Island Night Dive)

Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a Wednesday night dive at ROTTNEST ISLAND! Our last trip out saw sleeping turtles, spanish dancers, hunting wobbegong, big crayfish and so many of the weird and wonderful you don’t see during the day.

The weirdest critters come out at night (not least of which are the Perth Scuba Crew!) and we’d love you to join us.

Call on 9455 4448 to secure your spot on the boat. It’s only $75pp and everyone’s welcome to join us!

Sunday 20 January 2013 7:30am (FREE Shore Dive)

We’re heading north again this week meeting at METTAM’S POOL! The weather needs to be spot on for this site so check with us on Saturday afternoon what the weather is doing.

The best reef is to the South of the descent point, as the North is very weedy. The reef ledge drops off to 5-8m. This makes for a good dive along the back of the ledge with lots of small caves and holes to check out. About 100-150m south of the descent point the reef gets less interesting, so this is time to turn around.

There’s a good number and variety of critters at this site – so make sure you have your camera!

Wednesday 23 January 2013 7:00pm (FREE Shore Night Dive)

Meet the Perth Scuba Crew at BICTON BATHS for our free shore night dive. Everyone is welcome to join us to chase some prawns around and find the weird and wonderful critters that call the sand home.

Whilst the river may not seem very interesting, the dive sites come to life at night. We’ve seen schools of squid, bobtail squid hiding in the sand, big fat juicy prawns, blue manna crabs, mulloway (or mostly heard them) and loads of seahorses. It’s a really easy place to dive with a very short walk from the car park and across 10 m of sand into the brackish water.

Never night dived before? Don’t forget to bring a torch! Give us a call on 9455 4448 to let us know you’ll be there.

Sunday 27th January 2013 7:30am (FREE Shore Dive)

We’re heading north so this week meet at YANCHEP DOG BEACH! Turn onto Lagoon Drive from Marmion Avenue and then right onto Brazier Road. Follow the road around until you get to a small lay by just before Leonard Way opposite the bus shelter. The Perth Scuba Crew will meet you there.

This is a fair weather shore dive touted for crays but don’t get too excited as they are mostly under-size or very well concealed but there are a few well over size too towards the outer edge but not on the outer edge of the reef. If the sea has been calm for a few days you’ll get good Viz.

If the weather isn’t calm enough to go to the Dog Beach, we’ll drive around to the Lagoon for an explore. We WON’T be meeting at the shop this time, we’ll meet you at the dive site bright and early.
