Lena wreck Bunbury scuba diving Rottnest Island Night Dive
Dive the Lena wreck in Bunbury
We explored Rotto at NIGHT!

Perth Scuba is heading down to dive the Lena wreck in Bunbury on Saturday 23rd February @ 8:00am.

This is a unique diving experience for divers of all levels of experience.

The Lena was sunk as a dive wreck on Friday 19th December 2003. Apprehended by the Australian Navy in February 2002 while fishing illegally for  Patagonian Toothfish in Australian waters the Lena now provides a unique dive wreck only 3 nautical miles from the coast at Bunbury Western Australia. Bunbury is only 178 km and a comfortable 2 hour drive from Perth.

I (Joey) headed down a couple of weeks ago and explored every nook and cranny that this wreck had to offer. It was great to explore a wreck for an hour with no concern of over staying your no-decompression limits!

There’s plenty of coral growth with soft and hard corals. There’s lots of fish life in and around the wreck too. You can choose to take macro photographs of the corals, blenny’s, nudibranchs (my brother LOVES pointing these out when I have my wide angle lens!) and small fish. Then there’s the choice of wide angle with big cargo holds, the bow of the ship and the propeller at the stern.

Want to join us for a fun day diving in Bunbury? It’s only $130pp and includes 2 dives in Bunbury. All levels of divers are welcome to join us. Contact us to book your place or drop into the shop!

When we decided to head out to Rottnest Island for a night dive, the long range forecast was looking good and it was going to be an excellent night… Well, we were wrong about the forecast but it was still an EXCELLENT night! Whilst the swell was a lumpy 2 metres the wind was only 15 knots, making it a bit average. As we kitted up at the Jetty ready to depart I heard the famous “I never get seasick” from many mouths… Well, with a lumpy trip out to Rotto that was thankfully short, there were a couple of green faces that were wishing we were back on dry land!

We arrived at Rotto and tucked into a sheltered bay were the boat hardly rocked and we all piled into the water quickly – best to get OFF the boat so you feel better. As my buddy and I descended we realised the viz was GOOD! We could see about 15 metres in front of us and there was lots of rocky outcrops to explore.

Thanks to my buddy I saw lots of cool critters (thanks Ken!) and amongst them was a tiny cuttlefish, sting ray, numb ray (don’t touch these guys), LOTS of crayfish, eagle ray, a hunting octopus and plenty of fish darting around my lights. Plus the added bonus was the water was a balmy 23°C LOVELY! After nearly an hour underwater it was time to jump back on the boat. Whilst there was still some green tinged faces, there was lots of smiling faces too as we headed back to Fremantle.

Sunday 20 January 2013 8:30am (FREE Shore Dive)

Change of plan for Sunday – this week we’ll meet at Perth Scuba to select the dive site as north of the river won’t be conducive due to the higher swell. We’ll be heading to a lovely spot to enjoy the beautiful sunshine, warm water and low wind. Look forward to seeing you at Perth Scuba for your FREE BBQ breakfast at 8:30am!

Wednesday 23 January 2013 7:00pm (FREE Shore Night Dive)

Meet the Perth Scuba Crew at BICTON BATHS for our free shore night dive. Everyone is welcome to join us to chase some prawns around and find the weird and wonderful critters that call the sand home.

Whilst the river may not seem very interesting, the dive sites come to life at night. We’ve seen schools of squid, bobtail squid hiding in the sand, big fat juicy prawns, blue manna crabs, mulloway (or mostly heard them) and loads of seahorses. It’s a really easy place to dive with a very short walk from the car park and across 10 m of sand into the brackish water.

Never night dived before? Don’t forget to bring a torch! Give us a call on 9455 4448 to let us know you’ll be there.

Sunday 27 January 2013 7:30am (FREE Shore Dive)

We’re heading north so this week meet at YANCHEP DOG BEACH! Turn onto Lagoon Drive from Marmion Avenue and then right onto Brazier Road. Follow the road around until you get to a small lay by just before Leonard Way opposite the bus shelter. The Perth Scuba Crew will meet you there.

This is a fair weather shore dive touted for crays but don’t get too excited as they are mostly under-size or very well concealed but there are a few well over size too towards the outer edge but not on the outer edge of the reef. If the sea has been calm for a few days you’ll get good Viz.

If the weather isn’t calm enough to go to the Dog Beach, we’ll drive around to the Lagoon for an explore. We WON’T be meeting at the shop this time, we’ll meet you at the dive site bright and early.

Wednesday 30 January 2013 7:00pm (FREE Egypt Tour Info Night)

Perth Scuba is travelling to Egypt in 2015 and if you’re thinking of joining us or want to learn more about the trip – come to our FREE Information Evening. We’ll present what’s included in your awesome EGYPT dive and sight seeing adventure and answer your questions – all welcome!

Sunday 3 February 2013 9:00am (HMAS Swan Wreck Dive)

Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a double wreck dive on the HMAS SWAN. This is a BIG wreck and great for exploring, including getting some deep diving in. It’s only $165pp for 2 boat dives. Contact us to secure your place on the boat – or jump on our Wreck Diver Course for only $325 INCLUDING 2 dives on the HMAS Swan.

Located in the Indian Ocean, a little over 200km south of Perth at Dunsborough, the Swan shipwreck is an incredible dive. Once the H.M.A.S Swan – a Naval destroy escort ship, she was prepared and purposely sunk for divers in 1997. Today the Swan rests upright in 32 meters of water. She is 113 meters long and over 30 meters wide. She is home to many different species of marine life and corals.

Wednesday 6 February 2013 7:00pm (FREE Shore Night Dive)

This week join the Perth Scuba Crew on a Night Dive to THE COOMBE. Whilst the visibility isn’t always great, it’s a good spot for exploring critters that inhabit the wrecks located at this site. There’s even a couple of very cool deep wrecks that we can direct you to. Call us on 9455 4448 to let us know you’ll be there! Don’t forget your torch!

Sunday 10 February 2013 7:30am (FREE Shore Dive)

We’re heading north this week meeting at METTAM’S POOL! The weather needs to be spot on for this site so check with us on Saturday afternoon what the weather is doing.

The best reef is to the South of the descent point, as the North is very weedy. The reef ledge drops off to 5-8m. This makes for a good dive along the back of the ledge with lots of small caves and holes to check out. About 100-150m south of the descent point the reef gets less interesting, so this is time to turn around.

There’s a good number and variety of critters at this site – so make sure you have your camera!
