ROTTNEST ISLAND Saturday 9th February @ 8:00am

The Rottnest Island Marine Reserve has a far greater range of habitats, marine plants and animals than that of the adjacent mainland coastline. Extensive seagrass meadows occur around Rottnest Island, and with nine species, it is second only to Shark Bay in species diversity.

Approximately 400 species of fish and twenty species of coral occur within the Marine Reserve. Fish include the Western Australian dhufish, baldchin groper, harlequin fish, cobbler, flathead, leatherjacket, samson fish, tailor, butterfly fish, moon wrasse, blue devil and migratory fish such as marlin and tuna. The Island is also a popular area for migrating humpback whales, bottle-nose dolphins and Australian sea lions.

Last weekend was a great one for Perth Scuba and 5 of our Instructor Candidates with the finale if their hard work coming to fruition on the latest PADI Instructor Examinations.

Jocie Tysoe, Vicki Jones, Chun Kan Lam, Neill Papenfus and Alex Hebmann completed their Instructor Development Course the week prior with our Resident Course Director Garth Schumann who once again did a fantastic job in preparing the crew for the big weekend.

Garth was very impressed with the level of competence that the guys and girls showed and equally impressed with their presentations.

PADI’s Richard Evans flew in from Sydney to a fantastic weekend of weather and as always did a great job in relaxing the candidates for the big weekend. All of the new Instructors took on the Master Scuba Diver Trainer course which will allow them to begin teaching not only Open water , Advanced, Rescue and Divemaster courses, but another 5 specialty courses including Wreck, Nitrox, Deep, Navigation, Search & Recovery and heaps more. (They all got to choose 5 different ones).

Jocelyn gets her wings (or should I say “fins”) today with her first Open water course and Neill will be taking his first course next week. Great work guys! We all hope you enjoy teaching as much as the rest of us. Good luck to Jocie and Neil.

Unfortunately for us, a couple of our new Instructors will be heading overseas to pursue their new careers. Alex is heading to France to teach and will be getting into some of the technical diving side which will be great for him.

So once again, Perth Scuba is on a mission to get more Instructor candidates for our next IDC Program which commences on the Saturday 9th of March. The course is open to all qualified Dive masters and is very highly recommended as not only a great career step, but for anything you ever teach, present or whenever you do any public speaking, the PADI Instructor course will prepare you for it all.

Naturally, Perth Scuba has the best priced fully inclusive Instructor course in Australia and as our instructors are finding out, they are very highly regarded within the industry around the world due to the experience of the local conditions here in comparison to other places around the world. Whilst there are nice warm water places you can go to do your IDC, there is no substitute for the experience of diving in Perth which will prepare you for real day to day diving experiences.

If you would like to join the next Instructor Development Course in March, call the store to arrange an appointment with Garth or Yasu (Japanese Instructor Candidates) or simply book by calling into the store.

For an IDC information pack, call 9455 4448 and start your new career as a PADI Pro Today!!

Want to learn more? Join us at Perth Scuba at our FREE GoPro Career Information Evening on Wednesday 20th February @ 7pm. All are welcome to join us on this FREE Information Evening.

Contact us to secure your place on the boat – or jump on our Wreck Diver Course for only $325 INCLUDING 2 dives on the HMAS Swan.

Located in the Indian Ocean, a little over 200km south of Perth at Dunsborough, the Swan shipwreck is an incredible dive. Once the H.M.A.S Swan – a Naval destroy escort ship, she was prepared and purposely sunk for divers in 1997. Today the Swan rests upright in 32 meters of water. She is 113 meters long and over 30 meters wide. She is home to many different species of marine life and corals.

Wednesday 6 February 2013 7:00pm (FREE Shore Night Dive)

This week join the Perth Scuba Crew on a Night Dive to THE COOMBE. Whilst the visibility isn’t always great, it’s a good spot for exploring critters that inhabit the wrecks located at this site. There’s even a couple of very cool deep wrecks that we can direct you to. Call us on 9455 4448 to let us know you’ll be there! Don’t forget your torch!

Sunday 10 February 2013 7:30am (FREE Shore Dive)

We’re heading north this week meeting at METTAM’S POOL! The weather needs to be spot on for this site so check with us on Saturday afternoon what the weather is doing.

The best reef is to the South of the descent point, as the North is very weedy. The reef ledge drops off to 5-8m. This makes for a good dive along the back of the ledge with lots of small caves and holes to check out. About 100-150m south of the descent point the reef gets less interesting, so this is time to turn around.

There’s a good number and variety of critters at this site – so make sure you have your camera!

Wednesday 13 February 2013 7:00pm (FREE Shore Night Dive)

Join the Perth Scuba Crew for a FREE Night Dive. This week we’re off to the Palm Beach Jetty. This spot is great for chasing a few tiger prawns or taking photos. There’s plenty of the weird and wonderful that visit this area at night – including port jackson sharks, wobbegong shark, blue manna crabs, sea moths and many more. All are welcome to join us, so give the shop a call on 9455 4448 to let us know you’ll be there.

Sunday 17 February 2013 9:00am (Busselton Jetty Boat Dive $75pp)

This week we’re off to Busselton for a boat dive on the world famous Busselton Jetty. Busselton Jetty is a 2 kilometre long wooden jetty situated adjacent to the tourist town of Busselton, 275 kilometres south of Perth in Western Australia. The original structure was built in 1865 to service whaling ships. The best diving is at the end of the jetty. Jetty pylons stand like tall trees, each populated with a vibrant mixture of corals and temperate water invertebrate like nudibranchs. Schools of yellowtail scad and pike often hang like clouds. You’ll also discover starfish, crabs, shrimp, shellfish and small non-pelagic fish such as blennies, clingfish and other gobies. Occasionally, jewfish and samson fish zoom through. And if you’re extremely lucky, you may catch sight of a dolphin. The Busselton Jetty is a photographer’s underwater paradise. With a maximum depth of only 8 metres, even a novice diver can enjoy a long bottom time. Call 9455 4448 to book your place – but be quick!
