February 2012

Shannon Conway is a professional underwater photographer creating images for the educational, advertising, editorial and fine art market. Shannon lives in Fremantle, Western Australia.

Originating from Poole, on the Dorset coast of England, Shannon has always been fascinated by the ocean, spending most of his childhood summer holidays in Bournemouth with his grandparents, searching rock pools for marine creatures. With his wife Amanda he moved to Australia in 2006 in search of blue waters and sunny skies. After changing from a previous working life in IT, Shannon now focuses on his new career whilst sharing his passion by teaching underwater photography. He teaches one 2 one workshops in Fremantle and group workshops in photo friendly destinations around the globe.

Shannon is a very successful underwater photographer, and has won a variety of awards within the British Society of Underwater Photographers. He has also been awarded the top slot in underwater photo competitions in Bonaire, Truk Lagoon, Wakatobi and Dominica and was the winner in the underwater category of the prestigious ANZANG Nature and Landscape Photographer of the Year award in 2007 and 2008.

Shannon will be leading an exciting Perth Scuba group workshop to Lembeh in 2013. There will be a maximum of 12 diving guests and each guest will get a one on one dive with Shannon, underwater photography critique and plenty of help along the way to improve your underwater photography. Gavin Ee

Perth Scuba Photographer of the Month: Gavin EeNovember 2011

Gavin is still relatively new to diving having been certified just under 3 years ago. However in that short time he has already dived some of the world’s best sites from the Osprey & Great Barrier Reefs, Bali, Lembeh & Bunaken (North Sulawesi), Mabul & Sipadan (Borneo), Malapascua & Moalboal (Philippines) to the Maldives. His favourite destinations for photography are Lembeh and Maldives.

Underwater photography was a natural progression and he has been shooting with his current compact camera setup for just less than a year. This has developed into a real passion only recently since obtaining some lenses and using a strobe for lighting.

One of Gavin’s main aims in photography is to capture some of the more interesting moments of life underwater. He relishes the challenge of wide angle photography, and also being able to locate and shoot those hard to find unusual macro subjects.

“I sometimes go on a dive and I’ll only take a few photos. I’m usually waiting for the right moment, right time to be at the right place. If I’m constantly taking photos on a dive and don’t look around I end up not enjoying the dive and usually miss that right shot”

Gavin won his first accolades in a WA underwater photography competition shootout in Rottnest earlier this year, winning the Best Wide Angle and Best Portfolio categories for compacts. And only just recently he took out 2nd prize (Coral Triangle Category) in the recent Australasian Underwater Festival 2011 competition against some of the regions best photographers. Two of his photos were selected in the Top 100 exhibits at ODEX Dive Expo, Brisbane.

Gavin is aiming to set up a website soon, where his photographs can be viewed and purchased online from a selected range of professional prints. He hopes to reach out to a wider audience through underwater photography, showcasing to those that have never experienced the underwater world the diverse amount of delicate life in balance that can be so easily disappear. Enquiries about purchasing any prints from Gavin’s current photo gallery can be made via Perth Scuba.

Gavin currently shoots with a Canon S90 in a Fix Housing with Inon S2000 strobes. Inon LE-240 Focus Lighting. Wide angle lens by Fix and Macro Lenses by Inon.
