Scorching day cooled off at Point Walter Reserve

Scorching day cooled off at Point Walter Reserve

After a scorching 41°C December day, we couldn’t wait to hit the water at Point Walter Reserve. Apparently many others felt the same, as the foreshore and jetty were packed and parking spaces few and far between! Nine divers braved the crowds and hit the water as darkness fell on perfect conditions. Although we feared otherwise, the jetty was still teeming with life even after the hoards of swimmers had passed through. Our torch beams were met with rows of swayingmanta-club-night-dive-21dec2016-3 manta-club-night-dive-21dec2016-4 manta-club-night-dive-21dec2016-5 seahorses, and decorator crabs scuttled beneath debris as we glided past. A few divers headed out in pursuit of crabs and prawns at around 12m but there was little to be caught. On the return leg of the dive, two  cute squid danced a while for us before jetting off into the distance. It was divers versus fishermen as we returned past the jetty, dodging suspiciously well-aimed crab nets thrown our way. Thankfully, the crowds had since left and the public BBQs relinquished as we surfaced and exited the water. And of course it wouldn’t be a Manta Club Christmas without a post-dive BBQ! A lovely, warm Perth summer evening provided the ideal setting for an abundance of food, and even more diving stories as the night drew to a close. With last-minute Christmas lists on our minds, we said our goodbyes and called it a night on an excellent evening of diving. Merry Christmas everybody, here’s to some amazing diving in 2017!
