Perth Scuba Manta Club Night Dive Port Coogee 08Jan2014-2-2

written by Sarah Toohey – Perth Scuba PADI Divemaster

This is where the life is at!

We had a great turnout for our dive at the North Wall of the Coogee Marina last night, Wednesday 8 January 2014.

Two of our lovely crew were off on their first night dive ever and the marina wall did not disappoint.  Not only were we greeted by lionfish and seahorses there were plenty of the usual pomfrets and old wives schooling around us.

So much life teeming around the rocky wall it was hard to know where to look! Crayfish, globefish and octopus were everywhere.

Our trek back to shore we came across juvenile cuttlefish and a little shovel-nosed shark. I am definitely looking forward to seeing some of the photos that were taken.

While the dive was awesome, please be aware of the some of the aggression that people fishing off rocks and jetties may show! We had a couple if incidents last night with no one being harmed and no problems with possessions but it can be really dangerous to our divers. Do not compromise your safety by hanging around or trying to get even (fisherman have a right to be there too, so no cutting lines!) and please report this type of behaviour to the police.

Obviously, there’s a bad element minority around in the fishing community (diving community isn’t immune either) so keep an eye out for each other and if someone’s aggressive towards you or your buddy, report it to the police and let them handle it. Don’t get into an argument with rude, angry people and don’t give them reason to be angry – no line cutting or similar.

This has been a Perth Scuba Public Safety Announcement brought to you by the beers in the bottom of the fridge and leftover sausages in the freezer……
